The coarse face takes length down and sets the shape. The fine face closes the edge so it stops catching on fabric. Using only the coarse side is what leaves nails feeling rough and splitting later.
Emery boards wear out; that is the nature of them. Ten means throwing one away when it stops cutting instead of scraping along with a dead board for another month.
The grit is coarse enough for acrylic and dip overlays, not just natural nails. It is a hand file, so it will not replace an electric file for heavy removal work.
