Cleaning pump parts without wrecking them

Four small parts, twice a day, for months. Worth getting the routine right early.

Every part that touches milk needs washing after use. That list is shorter than it looks: the flange or insert, the collection body or bottle, the valve, and on a tubed pump the connector. Tubes on a closed-system pump do not touch milk and do not need washing unless something visibly got into them.

The daily routine

  1. Take the parts apart completely. A valve left seated inside a flange does not get clean.
  2. Rinse in cool water first. Hot water on fresh milk protein makes it stick.
  3. Wash in warm soapy water with a brush kept for this and nothing else.
  4. Rinse and stand the parts to air dry on a clean towel, not inside a closed container.

Air drying matters more than people expect. Damp parts stacked in a drawer are the most common way a clean pump stops being clean.

Dishwasher, yes, with conditions

The removable parts on our pumps are dishwasher safe on the top rack. Small valves go in a mesh basket unless you enjoy fishing them out of the filter. Keep everything away from the heating element at the bottom, because warping is what ends the life of a flange, and a warped flange does not seal.

Sterilizing, and how often

Daily washing is the routine; sterilizing is occasional. It matters most in the first months and for babies who were premature or are unwell, and guidance on that comes from your paediatrician rather than from us. What we can say is the equipment side: repeated long high-heat cycles cloud plastic, soften silicone and shorten the life of every part in the kit. Steam bags and short cycles are gentler than boiling everything for twenty minutes.

The parts that wear out anyway

Duckbill valves and membranes are consumables, not permanent parts. Under daily use they last roughly two to three months, sometimes less with frequent hot cycles. The signal is a slit that no longer sits closed at rest, and the symptom is a pump that feels weaker for no clear reason. Replacing a valve is cheaper than replacing confidence in your pump.

What never goes in water

The motor, the display unit and the charging port. On wearable cups the electronics are sealed into the base, which comes off as its own piece and stays dry. A quick wipe with a damp cloth is the whole cleaning routine for that part.
